Taking It to the Next Level: State-of-the Art Protractors he images and descriptions outlined above generally refer to the standard protractors supplied with tonearms and turntables. But there are a host of aftermarket devices that promise greater precision and improved performance. The most common is the Feickert, a universal protractor that employs a hybrid approach, with precise overhang adjustment and then dual grids for three different curves. At around $250, it is not cheap, but it offers significant sonic benefits when compared to the majority of standard protractors as well as a choice of curves that allows you to further optimize your alignment specific to the records in your collection. Above the Feickert lies the much more expensive Acoustical Systems SMARTractor (shown below), a universal device that uses a single point system, combined with a CNC-engraved grid that features incredibly fine lines. It also incorporates multiple curves, a precision pivot-to-spindle beam and different collars to ensure a precision fit over the spindle (a chronic weakness in many designs). But by far its most interesting feature is the incorporation of an integral magnifier. You can of course add a loupe to the Feickert, but having it included certainly eases the process. Both these tools feature excellent user manuals that explain both the process and the options/benefits that accrue. Finally, the Wallytractors offer the ability to purchase a dedicated, full-curve protractor specific to a given tonearm. For many years these were the ultimate solution, but these days they have been eclipsed by the likes of the universal Feickert and SMARTractor designs.
