Wilson Audio Bulks Up with the Pedestal Heavy
ilson Audio's Pedestal component footers pack a great deal of the company's R&D and knowledge of advanced materials into a 2 1/4" diameter, 1 5/16" high, 8-ounce package. But one limitation existed: the two existing Pedestal models support only 3-9 pounds or 8-25 pounds each, making them suitable for lower-weight components. The new Heavy Pedestal ($2225 per set of three) picks up where the earlier Pedestals leave off. Each Heavy Pedestal supports 10-52 pounds, so a set can now be used with much heavier components, such as amplifiers, turntables, power supplies and power conditioners. The general construction of all Pedestals remains the same: a sandwich of Wilson's V-Material and proprietary viscous damping materials is adhered to the non-magnetic stainless-steel housing. In between the V-Material and the bottom of the housing is an elastomeric material that acts almost like a spring. When compressed, the Pedestal decouples the V-Material from the surrounding stainless-steel housing. While most similar products claim either to couple or isolate, the Pedestal does both, coupling effectively to the bottom of the product it supports, providing an exit path for vibration, and isolating the component from airborne or structure-borne vibration. While the three Pedestal models have defined weight limits, they can be used together to support equipment whose weight distribution is almost never uniform, and, where needed, the Heavy Pedestal can even support some loudspeakers. |
