Active or Passive: New Two-Way Speakers from Dynaudio

by The Audio Beat | March 6, 2025

ynaudio's extensive lineup of speakers grows by two models with the introduction of the Contour 20 Black Edition ($8000 per pair) and Confidence 20A (right, $24,000 per pair). Both are two-way monitors, but the Contour 20 Black Edition is a traditional passive speaker while the Confidence 20A is an active model with extensive built-in electronics.

The Contour 20 Black Edition improves on every internal part over the model it replaces. The tweeter and midrange/bass driver have been upgraded to drivers equal to Dynaudio's Confidence-level speakers: a 7 1/8" Dynaudio NeoTec MSP midrange/woofer and 1 1/8" Esotar 3 with Hexis tweeter. The crossover has been both simplified and upgraded with better components, and the bass-reflex port improves performance as well. Dynaudio calls the speaker's new finish "all-business . . .sleek, stealthy, and purposeful." The Contour 20 Black Edition's sensitivity is 86dB (2.83V/1m) and its impedance is 4 ohms. Its frequency response is given as 50Hz-23kHz (+/- 3dB). The crossover frequency is 3600Hz.

The Confidence 20A builds on Dynaudio's extensive legacy of both consumer and professional active speakers. All the Contour 20A's electronics -- analog amplification, digital and sophisticated DSP -- are built into the speaker's stand; all that’s needed is a preamp or source with volume control. The Confidence 20A uses a 7 1/8" Dynaudio NeoTec MSP midrange/woofer and 1 1/8" Esotar 3 tweeter. Inputs include analog and digital XLR, along with a digital XLR output. The Confidence 20A's frequency response is 34Hz-25kHz (+/- 3dB), or 30Hz-28kHz (-6dB dynamic). The DSP-based crossover frequency is 2500Hz. Onboard amplifier power is 150 watts for the Confidence 20A's tweeter and 400 watts for its woofer.
