Thanks
for the music

Marc,
Love
your site! I have found many new artists that are now on heavy rotation thanks to The
Audio Beat. I especially liked the artists that . . . You Might Have Missed. Son Little was discovered, by
me, this way. I haven't seen this in a while and would be eager to see it again.
There are so many artists and so much music that I know I am missing out on, but your site
brings me closer to uncovering these gems.

Choosing
subwoofers
September

Marc,
Regarding
the size of a subwoofer, would the size of the driver be best correlated to room size or
the size of the main speakers, or perhaps a combination of both? My Audio Physic speakers
are floorstanders, but narrow-front-baffle, compact floorstanders. However, my room Is
medium to large, so I have subs with 12" drivers. Is there any magical formula or
just what my ears tell me?

The
size of a subwoofer's driver roughly corresponds to the sub's overall output capabilities,
both in terms of ultimate loudness and bass depth. These should be suitable for your room
-- the larger the room, the larger the driver (and enclosure, for that matter). However,
as you suggest, your ears matter most, the quality of the bass and its sonic mating with
your main speakers being most important. Subwoofers should be seen and not heard; that is,
if you can clearly hear the subs when music is playing (aside from recordings with very
prominent low frequencies), they are probably misadjusted or, as is often the case, simply
too loud. My "magical formula" is, when you switch the subs off, you should
notice the difference, but when you turn them on, you should wonder if they are working.

More
letters, please

Marc,
While
I love visiting your site and reading the insightful reviews, I must say its
disappointing to see the frequency of Please add me requests in the Letters
section. I think you and your readers would be better served by publishing more questions
or comments by your readers.
Jeff

I
agree with you about the Letters section. Unfortunately, we don't always have the
questions to answer or comments to post. I will only publish one "please add me"
letter a month, always on the 1st, so people are reminded that the reader e-mail list
exists. Beyond that, we rely on you, our readers, for letters to post. -Marc
