Low numbers?

October 23, 2022

Marc,

Do you think it's worth getting low numbers as far as eventual resale value and sound quality go for the new Steely Dan or other UHQRs? With the price up to $150, plus shipping, with one seller I'll get a number probably in the hundreds and with another it will be in the thousands.

I don't think low numbers matter sonically after a certain point, and that's probably a couple of hundred at the most. Resale value may be a different matter, as collectors are always willing to pay a premium for lower numbers. Also, having seen records pressed, I think there's no guarantee that any number corresponds directly to the sequence in which that LP was stamped. Number 38 could actually be LP 380 or 3800, or vice versa. I'm sure the labels try to keep LPs in sequence, but with thousands or tens of thousands of copies of a given title to put in inner and outer sleeves, and perhaps boxes, the sequence can be off and no consumers will ever know.
