"Best
setup I have ever had and possibly ever heard"

Marc,
I
picked up a Timbre TT-1 DAC. Really, really good. I'm running it with a Luminous Audio
Xiom II preamp, a Classé Ten power amp, Hales Revelation One speakers, and a $3000
Musical Fidelity CD player as a transport. Also running a Wiim Pro Plus streamer into it.
Best
setup I have ever had and possibly ever heard.

I
still own a Timbre TT-1, along with another DAC I liked (but didn't buy, because of the
price) from the same era, the Conrad-Johnson Premier 9. I reviewed the TT-1 (a different
unit) many years ago, and both it and the Premier 9 still sound wonderful to me, 35 years
after their introduction.
If you really want to hear the TT-1 (and the Premier 9) at its best, find a
transport with an ST-optical output, which the TT-1 can accommodate. That is the most
neutral and wideband connection format. It makes the others (S/PDIF, AES/EBU and
especially TosLink) sound colored. My favorite transport from that era is the CEC TL-1,
which is not easy to find, especially if you are like me and play lots of CD-Rs (the TL-1
requires a factory mod to the servo board to play CD-Rs). But if you're patient, you can
find one, and it has ST-optical output.
Another
tip: the Genesis Digital Lens and Audio Alchemy DTI Pro-32 (with ST-optical input and
output) are worth finding for use in between your chosen transport and the Timbre or
Conrad-Johnson DAC. -Marc Mickelson
