about, er, upgrading this part of the website? And extending the list of recommended music
in particular?

hit upon one of two areas (the other being the Archives) for which I'm perpetually in
"gonna do it" mode but also perpetually behind, because of everything else that
has to be done to keep articles appearing on the site. With some luck (and some help), I
will get to both before year's end -- and perhaps in advance of that. The Audio Beat's
ten-year anniversary is approaching, and I'd like to get these projects underway and

or Esoteric?

I am either buying an Esoteric
K-01 or a much less expensive Ayre C-5xeMP. Price aside, is the K-01 operating at a
much higher level of performance? I expect yes.

That's hard for me to answer. I
own an Ayre DX-5 DSD, and I would choose that over either of the models you're
considering. If you can find one of those (they are not that rare used), that would be my
choice. Unlike either of the other players, the DX-5 DSD also plays Blu-rays and is a very
good USB DAC. Barring that player, the Esoteric K-01 is newer and probably less prone to
breaking down than a well-used C-5xeMP, which I'm not sure Ayre can fully service any
longer. Of course, getting service from Esoteric will also be more difficult, because TEAC
no longer has an office in the US. -Marc Mickelson
