Repairing Maggies

January 21, 2020

Marc,

A buddy of mine is looking to have Magnepan 3.6R speakers repaired. Anyone you can recommend ?

Sheldon Simon

Yes, I can recommend Magnepan itself. They obviously have the know-how and skill to repair or refurbish any speaker they've ever made. However, with some older models, you are better off simply buying a new Magnepan than paying to fix an old speaker, because the performance level has increased over time, along with the fact that the cost to repair a very old speaker (Magnepan has been in business for fifty years) increases. Your friend's 3.6R's are speakers that he should have repaired. That ribbon tweeter is a sonic marvel. -Marc Mickelson

IKEA isolation platform

January 15, 2020

Marc,

I read your article "Variation on a Theme: A DIY IKEA Aptitlig Isolation Platform." What balls would be appropriate in between the blocks?

Rick Ursberg

The size of the ball bearings I used is indicated in the article: 7/16". As for their composition, I've tried steel and brass bearings, as well as Delrin balls -- all of which you can find on eBay for just a few dollars. I'm not sure I hear any difference among them, but better ears than mine may discern that one is better than another. -Marc Mickelson
