Tube preference

December 27, 2024

Marc,

Age old question, I guess. Out of curiosity -- as a veteran audiophile -- do you have any preference regarding KT88 versus EL34 output tubes?

My musical tastes are rather eclectic -- mostly jazz/female vocals but no shortage of hard rock, and classical as well. Have you found either one of these tubes preferable? Or perhaps any suggestions of others?

Many thanks as always. I hope you have a joyous, peaceful holiday weekend.

That depends on the amp, but in general I prefer EL34s, which have a great midrange and don't sound as lush as KT88s (again, in general). Due to Ken Stevens of CAT and his amps, I think the KT120 is a very good output tube as well. -Marc Mickelson
