Disc
sleeves

Marc,
Like
you, I believe, I put discs in the thin CD holders when they are part of a boxed set in
order to make it simpler to get to the music. However, I have many of these cardboard
cases, especially for Blu-rays that are part of a larger set. I had been trying to force
the thin Japanese plastic liners to protect the discs; however, this is quite a
"jam" session due to the fact that these square cases are designed to fit the
discs only. When I squeeze the cardboard on top and bottom the disc comes out nicely and
doesn't seem to get scratched. Do you think this is a safe way to house these very
precious discs or should I always take them out and put them in the thin plastic CD cases?

As
long as the cardboard or paper sleeves aren't abrasive, at most the disc would leave very
light scratches when it is inserted or removed, and those won't cause a disc not to play.
And as you illustrate, the sleeves don't really touch the disc surface, because squeezing
the edges opens the sleeve a bit. So I don't think you have anything to worry about. (I
actually find those small rice-paper sleeves a hassle to use.) -Marc Mickelson
