Wilson Audio Packs New Thinking Into the Alexia V
ilson Audio's new Alexia V (starting at $67,500 per pair) draws on the design and manufacturing work done for the speakers that directly precede it, including the Alexx V and Chronosonic XVX, and also some brand-new innovations that will surly find their way into yet-to-come Wilson speakers. The Alexia V's cabinet uses the latest versions of Wilson's X-Material and S-Material, along with V-Material wherever efficient energy transfer is necessary. Also in use are carbon fiber, aerospace-grade aluminum, and non-magnetic stainless steel, and connection points throughout the signal path use gold. The internal volume of the midrange enclosure was increased by 6.4% to effect, according to Wilson, "a more open-sounding midrange," and the woofer enclosure's internal volume is now 8.9% greater. The Alexia V uses Wilson's Convergent Synergy Carbon (CSC) tweeter, which was introduced for the Alexx V. The Alexia V also uses Wilson's Alnico QuadraMag midrange, which was first developed for the Chronosonic XVX. Each custom AudioCapX-WA capacitor used in the Alexia V's crossover was wound and finished at Reliable Capacitors, Wilson Audio's in-house capacitor-manufacturing department. These unique capacitors, along with fine-tuning of the crossover topology, have "contributed to a new standard in low-level loudspeaker resolution." Modifications made to the crossover have also slightly improved the impedance measurement in the bass region and increased overall sensitivity by 1dB over the Alexia Series 2. Included with Alexia V is a set of Wilson Audio's Acoustic Diode footers, and there is now an integrated bubble level on the top of the woofer cabinet that makes leveling the speakers much easier. As with all Wilson speakers, the finish options for a pair of Alexia Vs are vast and include many new cabinet colors and the choice of grille and hardware color. |
